2020-21 Acalanes & President's Volunteer Service Awards Program
Spring is the time for students to submit their volunteer service applications and now is the time to start getting organized! Given the limited volunteer opportunities, we reduced the service hour minimum to 20 hours to help more students qualify for the Acalanes Award. The President's Volunteer Service award is a federal program and we cannot modify their minimum number of hours/program requirements. We encourage students to be creative with ideas that can turn into volunteer opportunities while following guidelines to keep yourself, families and neighbors safe. Ideas to consider (verification of hours is still necessary):
- Grocery shopping or running errands for senior, disabled or at-risk neighbors
- Tutoring or Homework help (unpaid) for younger students in your neighborhood (non-family members)
- AHS Clubs focused on service such as Key Club, Children's Hospital, Equip for Equality, Environmental, Asian Student Union, SAGE, Protect Animals Worldwide
If you have a great idea about a way to be of service in your community and want to see if it qualifies under the AHS program, email us! In the meantime, download the service award application forms here. Then submit completed, scanned applications between March 25 and April 10, 2021 to communityservice@acalanesparentsclub.com.

There is a lot to celebrate, and a lot of dialogue in which to engage. We kick off Black History Month in cohort tomorrow and events continue throughout the month. Two community events to register for ahead of time:- Wednesday, Feb 17 at 5pm Women in Leadership Series with Elizabeth Brown - Elizabeth Brown is a resident of Georgia and is a Director at the Housing Authority. Prior to that, she was a Social Worker at The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in the Department of Psychiatry & Health Behavior. Link to register in advance.
- Tuesday, Feb 23 at 6:30pm Arshay Cooper Dialogue - Join us in conversation with author Arshay Cooper. The dialogue will be facilitated by an influential community member and 3 students: Ava Freeman, Franny Daughters, and Miles Burger. Arshay will share more about his life, trauma, police brutality, film career, experience as a rower, and more. The novel and film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago, coming together to row in the same boat). Order your copy from Orinda Books and a percentage of the proceeds will go to a BSU selected charity. Please register in advance here.

Wellness Center
The following is a message from our Bring Change to Mind student leadership board:
“We are asking parents to help us spread the word about the BC2M club and a special opportunity. We will be co-hosting a district-wide meeting with all four BC2M clubs to have an open conversation about students' mental health. There will be various topics to choose from and a guest speaker. This district-wide meeting will be hosted on February 8th from 11-1 pm on zoom. To attend, students must RSVP: Bring Change 2 Mind District Summit (AUHSD) (google.com)
The deadline to RSVP is on Thursday, February 4th at 10 pm. This meeting is very important in sparking conversation amongst students and building a sense of community and understanding throughout the district. Invite a friend and help us spread the word on Instagram @bringchangetomindacalanes.
We are especially interested in getting freshmen and sophomores who want to be involved in the effort to de-stigmatize mental illness! This is a great opportunity for them to connect with others, especially students in upper grades. Thank you!”

Legislative News
Now that the Regional Stay-At-Home order has been lifted, there is hope that we will move into the red tier and then shift to a hybrid model for our schools. Governor Newsom’s efforts to encourage districts to reopen through incentives seem to be stalling, but some legislators who are critical of his plan think maybe there is room for compromise with Assembly Bill 10, which would mandate that schools reopen when they enter the red tier. With Gov. Newsom’s back-to-school plan all but doomed, what might it take to salvage it? Either way, parents across the state are growing increasingly frustrated with the situation and some are advocating for change. Newly formed California-wide parent group turns up the pressure to reopen schools
