More on Nutrition – REALLY?
I just finished another Pediatric Nutrition course and learned even more about what our kids need now and long-term. One of the pearls highlighted (as always) was the importance of regular “Family Dinner” (which can really be any meal of the day), and how it is one of the strongest indicators of both academic success and health and wellness. TheFamily Dinner Project is an interesting website to look at.
Why You Need To Take An ATTENTION DIET

Kids who develop healthy habits in childhood and adolescence will be more likely to sustain a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives and will suffer less incidence and severity of chronic disease.

Feeding your family yummy nutritious meals helps support EVERYTHING about their health–mental, physical, emotional. So it will ALSO support their academic success! Some good recipes:
- Lemon herb tofu: Tofu is nutritious, versatile, cheap and easy to cook. This will also combine well with ginger orange broccoli noodles.
- Red lentil soup is great during these colder winter months!

Make 2023 an AWEsome year!
Book I am reading: AWE: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life. I follow Dacher Keltner of The Greater Good and went this week to hear Michael Pollan interview Dacher about the book and the emotion (yes!) of Awe.
Why do I share recipes? Because feeding your family yummy nutritious meals helps support EVERYTHING about their health–mental, physical, emotional. So it will ALSO support their academic success!

I tried another red lentil soup last week which I loved (even though I forgot to add the broth!).

Getting Off to a Good Start in 2023
January is a great reason to use our energy towards setting intentions (vs resolutions). Goal-setting follows setting intentions. Focusing on intentions keeps us grounded and allows us to experiment and even fail (great value can be found in failing), and then return back to our intentions.
Use January as a motivation, excuse, whatever reason to focus on BALANCE in your family and with/for your student. Balance and resilience go hand-in–hand. Students will manage stress better with balance in their lives. Prioritize sleep, healthy eating, regular physical movement, and connection, in addition to school and studying. Please consider that each of us only has a 24 hour day. For our teens, 8-10 of those hours should be devoted to sleep. You can do the rest of the math, but the point is to factor in time for taking care of ourselves and also making sure to buffer in time for the unexpected. It’s especially important not to over-schedule – this in and of itself sets up a baseline of unmanageable stress. Please let me know what works well to support balance and resilience for your students.
Not sure how to prevent drug or alcohol use? Or what to do if you suspect or havediscovered substance use?

Here’s a great website on SLEEP.
Start the new year off right by starting the day strong – make time for breakfast!
Ask your student what kind of food they want in the morning before school. If they sleep until the last minute, talk about what portable healthy food you can make available for them to grab on their way to school:
- Cereal, instant oatmeal
- Green smoothie
- Breakfast burrito
- Fruit (fresh and dried)
- Nuts
- PB&J
