Your 2011-12 Dollars at Work

Acalanes Parents Club has committed more than $360,000 to AHS this school year, providing vital services for every student at Acalanes High School.

Here are a few ways your child will benefit from APC donations this year. Our full proposed budget is available here. Help ensure that these items will remain fully funded by donating today.

ADDITIONAL SECTIONS

APC is proud to fund ten classes not otherwise available this year. Your donations provide:

  • 3 additional periods of English (core)
  • 3 additional periods of math (core)
  • 3 additional periods of social studies (2 core and 1 elective)
  • 1 additional period of science (elective)

These additional class periods provide options for students otherwise dropped from full classes, expanded choices for students wishing to take seven periods, and reduced class sizes in key core classes. Decisions on reduced class sizes are made by staff according to WASC and Site goals, and individual grade level needs.

As a result of your comments at Friday Forum, AHS now offers Contemporary Issues, a college preparatory social studies elective offered to 10th-12th graders. APC purchased an additional class period this fall (for a total of three periods offered) due to high student demand.

GRANT PROGRAMS

APC is committed to facilitating the home/school connection while reinforcing what keeps Acalanes part of the #1 high school district in the state. Our new grants will support pilot programs in science, technology, and teacher-parent communications.

We encourage all parents to participate in the development of this exciting new direction, by attending Parent Club meetings and/or joining the Grant Committee

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

A large part of Acalanes' success is our hard-working staff. Effective teachers are allowed time to collaborate, working together to calibrate grading rubrics and integrate curriculum. Teacher work days, an essential part of this collaborative effort, were eliminated with the furlough days. APC provides substitute teachers, supplies, and conference fees so teachers can continue learning and working together.

PEER TUTORING

APC donations are hard at work in our Peer Tutoring (PT) Department. Peer Tutoring provides a supportive atmosphere for learning and is available to all students at Acalanes. The program is designed to meet individual needs in all grade levels - AP and honors students, students in intervention, special ed, and regular classes. Over 5,900 student tutoring sessions were logged last year alone! We are fortunate to have such dedicated Co-Directors and student tutors fostering PT as an integral part of the effort to make Acalanes High School a place where everyone can succeed.
