October 6, 2011
Dear Acalanes High School Community,

The first month of the school year is over and everyone has settled into the routine of school. It has been a busy month with our students fully absorbed in their courses and our athletic teams starting their league games. Last Friday, we hosted our annual Clubs' Fair where students had an opportunity to sign up to participate in many of our clubs. For a complete list of 2011-2012 Acalanes clubs, please visit the clubs page on our website . The Leadership class has been very busy planning and organizing the upcoming Homecoming week. The week will kick off with Hallway decorating on Monday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. and end with a semi-formal Homecoming Dance on Saturday the 15th. Details of homecoming week are listed below.

Now that the students have settled into their classes, first progress reports will be arriving at your homes next week. In addition to having a paper copy, you will also have access to the grades online. If your student received a progress report, it will be available on our PASS system at https://pass.acalanes.k12.ca.us from October 7 until October 21. Please use your blackboard user name and password to log in. If you have questions about your child's progress please contact the teacher directly.

In observance of Yom Kippur, the Acalanes vs. Campolindo football game has been moved from Friday, October 7 to today, Thursday, October 6. It is a big game for the Dons as they take on the Cougars at home starting at 7:00pm. We are still looking for volunteers to help with the BBQ during the game from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. Please contact Kristen Kisner at kristinkisner@comcast.net if you are willing to volunteer.

In order to promote a safe and secure environment at school functions, Acalanes HS will be providing transportation for all seniors to the Senior Ball. This type of transportation has been used in the past for the Junior Prom only and will be expanded to the Senior Ball starting with the 2012 Senior Ball. We hope that you will support us in this endeavor. We believe that this will improve the safety of our students. Blueprint, the Acalanes award winning school newspaper, has done a feature story on this topic in their recent issue. You may access this story on line at http://www.acalanesblueprint.com/ballbuses.html.

In an effort to recognize our students' outstanding achievements in the classroom, Acalanes High School has begun a "Student of the Month" program. Each month, the entire AHS staff is asked to nominate a student. Staff members will be given a word of the month and are asked to nominate a student who best exemplifies that word. For the month of September, we have been nominating students who are "motivated" to learn and achieve at high levels. Out of 1367 students at Acalanes, 20 were selected and recognized for the month of September. Please scroll down to the bottom of this letter to see our twenty September Students of the Month. Congratulations to all of them!

We will be hosting our monthly Friday Forum on Friday, October 7 at 8:30 a.m. in the Faculty Dining Room. This meeting will feature Joan Karr from the College and Career Center, Karen Findley our Librarian and Cheryl Lua our Lead Counselor. We hope to see many of you there.

On Monday, October 10, all district schools will be closed due to the District Furlough Day. There will be no school for the students on that day.

Thank you for reading.
