This week, I have a few messags of heartfelt thanks....
Parent Ed Event a Huge Success
If you attended last week's event, I'm sure you were just as impressed and inspired by the speakers as my husband and I. Thanks again to Lori Brueckner and Nancy Falk for their efforts to bring this to Acalanes - a first, and hopefully not last, visit by these two engaging speakers.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Acalanes staff were treated to a fabulous luncheon last Thursday. Thanks to Debbie Warren, Terry Chaparro and all of the wonderful volunteers who shopped, prepped and served. Your efforts are hugely appreciated by our hardworking staff.
Finals Fuel
Students were so grateful to receive a healthy snack and word of encouragement last week. A huge thank you to the Class Liaisons and the many parents who donated and handed out snacks. I was present two of the days and was so impressed how every student expressed their apprecation. We've got great kids at Acalanes!
Thank you to everyone who has donated time, funds and goods to Acalanes - whether through APC, LPIE, Athletic or Performing Arts Boosters or your child's team or club. We are all fortunate to be part of this caring and generous community. Thank you for taking part and making a difference.

Wishing everyone a happy finals week! I hope to see you on Thursday for Bringing Happiness to High School at 7pm in the PAC. Details in the Parent Ed section below.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!
A New Focus in 2012
APC Parent Ed is proud to host two Stanford professors who recently made headlines for their popular and groundbreaking class The Pursuit of Happiness. Doctors Luskin and Pertofsky will explain how our students can truly thrive given the unique challenges of our high performing environment. Lessons learned will benefit every family now and lay valuable groundwork for the future. Details in their article below in "Parent Ed" section.
A special thanks to our Parent Ed chairs, Nancy Falk and Lori Brueckner, for bringing this incredible life skills workshop to Acalanes. This is just one of many exciting events they planned this year - stay tuned for more...

Students Benefit from Peer Tutoring
Does your student need a little extra help, especially now that quarter grades have arrived? Encourage them to check out the AHS Peer Tutoring program. The staff and hand-selected tutors make each student feel welcome, so the program not only improves grades but fosters peer connections on campus.
Peer Tutoring is located in room #6, in the hallway between the Drama room and the 100 wing. Students may drop in during lunch, 7th period, and after school until 4pm.
Acalanes Parents Club is proud to support the Peer Tutoring program, thanks to our generous parent donors.
Keep The Ideas Coming
Thank you to everyone who emailed suggestions and spoke up at the last Friday Forum regarding campus improvement. We've heard everything from better communication surrounding school events, to improving bathrooms and campus beautification, to purchasing extra books to lighten student backpacks. Do you have an idea or a change you'd like to see? I'd like to hear from you!
Enjoy your three day weekend - remember there is no school on Friday 11/11 in honor of Veteran's Day.

Enjoy a cup of coffee while quickly finding out the latest on school events and communications, Class updates, and more, before department presentations begin.

APC Proudly Supports Math, Special Education, and PE Students
We are proud to fully fund two class periods of math this school year, allowing teachers more time to spend with each student. All Freshmen benefit from the APC-funded health curriculum. In Special Education, we purchased two Kurzweil machines to aid communication and learning in the classroom.
Do you have an idea on how we can improve?
APC has $16,500 set aside for new ways to improve the Acalanes experience. Bring your ideas to Friday Forum or please email me. Thank you for your insight and participation!

A HUGE congratulations to AHS staff and students for the 13-point jump in our API score. We realize this number is just a small reason why Acalanes is so phenomenal, but Parents Club salutes you. We're proud to collaborate and support your efforts (eg. by providing the amazing Illuminate data processing software used to understand how students are learning in real time).
Parents, please come to the Parents Club reception at Back to School Night,

AHS and Parents Club rely on parent volunteers for a variety of events and services. Due to an unfortunate technical glitch, this year's volunteer sign-up information (part of Online Registration) was corrupted.
PLEASE log on to our website (or click the direct link) and (re-)enter your volunteer interests. Volunteering is a great way to meet staff and fellow parents, and contribute to our wonderful AHS community. THANK YOU!
